WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously struck down a Massachusetts law that barred protests near abortion clinics.

The law, enacted in 2007, created 35-foot buffer zones around entrances to abortion clinics. State officials said the law was a response to a history of harassment and violence at abortion clinics in Massachusetts, including a shooting rampage at two facilities in 1994.

Yiddish a Slavic language

Dr. Wexler [Dr. Paul Wexler, a Tel Aviv University linguist.] uses a reconstruction of Yiddish to argue that it began as a Slavic language whose vocabulary was largely replaced with German words. Going even further, he contends that the Ashkenazic Jews are predominantly converted Slavic and Turkic people who merged with a tiny population of Palestinian Jews from the Diaspora.

While few linguists are convinced by this radical hypothesis, the notion of a Slavic origin for Yiddish is being taken as a serious challenge to the field. "Even if he is not absolutely right," said Dr. Jacobs, "we are forced into a discussion of the issues he has raised."

ISIS is claiming on Twitter it has executed the Judge who ordered the hanging of Saddam Hussein. It says Khalil Hussein Attia,a Jordanian official has confirmed the news, and said Judge Raouf Abdel-Ramen tried to flee disguised as a dancer.

In 2007, Judge Raouf Abdel-Ramen (aka Rashid Abd al-Rahman )sought asylum to Great Britain but later canceled his application. In 2008, in Iraq, he condemned the hanging.

Several non-English newspapers are also reporting the claimed execution (here too), as is Wikipedia. He was apparently kidnapped a few days ago.

удивительно бездарный роман. Господи! (именно так, с восклицательным знаком) встречается в тексте 18 раз. а Господи, (с запятой) - 60, да-да, шестьдесят раз. вплоть до - О Господи, Господи, Господи...

к сожалению пример плохого текста привести трудно, текст бездарен равномерно, плохо все подряд. вот начало монолога Фрэнсиса:

  - Простите меня, Брэд. Я бедный, жалкий извращенец... Всю жизнь я такой несчастный... Когда меня лишили диплома, я думал, что умру от горя. очень смешной отзыв на amazon by one Terri: Very misogynist. Ingrid Bergman was very beautiful but acted like a moron. Who would tolerate being treated like that? The movie was awful. стоит посмотреть остальные ее отзывы, тоже смешно.

Монт-Ориоль - лишнее подтверждение тому, что Мопассан - исключительно занудный автор. опять же - типичная для французов концентрация на физической/технической стороне событий. этакая смесь милого друга с таинственным островом.

особенно это заметно после Кристины Хофленер Цвейга: там материальный мир присутствует, конечно, но как-то опосредованно, в связи с происходящим. под конец Цвейг задор сильно растерял, тоже стало занудно. а в начале - живенько и по-немецки сентиментально. читают отлично и то и другое, впрочем. в общем Монт-Ориоль бросил на середине.

а вот орешник зеленеет - в сименоновском стиле, сначала скучно и непонятно зачем, а потом начинает проясняться и оказывается по-сименоновски трогательно. жаль только слишком похоже на сказку. что бы этот добрый дедушка делал если бы сам сидел в жопе, как его американская родня. читает Shniferson. хмм... по выговору на Шниферзона не похож, даже если вырос в Челябинске. но мне нравится как читает.
