Vanishing point

Vanishing Point (1971 film)

Newman also thought that the entire film was an essay on existentialism [это из Wiki].

impudence and money

“Wealth however got in England makes
Lords of mechanics, gentlemen of rakes:
 Antiquity and birth are needless here;
Tis impudence and money makes a peer.”

- Daniel Defoe

mechanic тут не слишком подходит, можно заменить на lords out of fraudsters

scorned

Heav'n has no Rage, like Love to Hatred turn'd,
Nor Hell a Fury, like a Woman scorn'd.
- The Mourning Bride

The Lady Is A Tramp

Lena Horne
I get too hungry for dinner at eight
I like the theater but never come late
I never bother with people I hate
That's why the lady is a tramp
I don't like crapgames with Barons and Earls
Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
That's why the lady is a tramp
I like the free fresh wind in my hair
Life without care
I'm broke, it's oke
Hates California is cold and is damp
That's why the lady is a tramp

- Lyrics by Lorenz Hart

Goodly Fere

A master of men was the Goodly Fere,
A mate of the wind and sea.
If they think they ha’ slain our Goodly Fere
They are fools eternally.

The Ballad of Reading Gaol

The Ballad of Reading Gaol
Read by Nick Gisburne

more deadly than the male

More Deadly than the Male.

The Female of the Species by Rudyard Kipling :
When the Himalayan peasant meets the he-bear in his pride,
He shouts to scare the monster, who will often turn aside.
But the she-bear thus accosted rends the peasant tooth and nail.
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.

day, immeasurably long

The day, immeasurably long, sleeps over the broad hills and warm wide fields. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Butcher's Crossing by John Williams.]

Not a murmur was heard

Lure of the Limerick

"I must leave here," said Lady De Vere,
"For these damp airs don't suit me, I fear."
    Said her friend: "Goodness me!
    If they don't agree
With your system, why eat pears, my dear?"

There was a young girl from Darjeeling
Who could dance with such exquisite feeling.
    Not a murmur was heard,
Not a sound, not a word,
Save for fly buttons hitting the ceiling.

plumber of Leigh

On the breasts of a barmaid from Sale,
Were tattooed the prices of Ale.
    And on her behind,
For the sake of the blind,
The same information in Braille.

There was a young plumber of Leigh
Who was plumbing a maid by the sea.
Said the maid, “Cease your plumbing,
    I hear someone coming.”
Said the plumber, still plumbing, “It's me.”

  Тяжбы, да спор о делах, дома – своя суета;
Сельская жизнь многотрудна; тревоги полно мореходство;
  Не миновать, холостым – дни одиноко влачить;

The Pleasures of Rimbaud

...two words are not considered a proper rhyme in English unless there is a different first consonant on the last accented syllable of both words - which makes possible the famous extravagant rhymes of Byron ("ladies intellectual/henpecked you all") and Ogden Nash ("the pelican/Whose beak holds more than his belly can"). - The Pleasures of Rimbaud by Charles Rosen in nyrb, August 18, 2011 / Volume LVIII, Number 13

left-hand thread

Here's a toast to Screwy Dick,
The man who was born with a corkscrew prick.
He spent his life in a futile hunt,
To find a woman with a spiral cunt.
And when he did, he dropped stone dead,
'Cause the blasted thing had a left-hand thread!

- sameplace

bribe or twist

You cannot hope to bribe or twist,
Thank God! the British journalist.
But, seeing what the man will do
unbribed, there's no occasion to.
- Humbert Wolfe, 1885-1940
