Stoner is certainly very good, but to my taste Williams it's not up to Hamilton's prose, with Hamilton's very own, very recognizable voice, lots of details, observations, his dark & disturbing prose (if uneven) style.
somehow i'm a bit dissatisfied with Stoner, not sure why... may be because his affair with Katherine looks a bit ridiculous - like a "well deserved reward"? an answer to his thoughts about life's meaning? and doesn't his final "victory" over Lomax look somewhat funky?
his letting go of Katherine leaves one really wondering about meaning of life... the story of his daughter reminds me of American Pastoral by Roth.
и забавно похоже на Мастер и Маргарита, даже дьявол-Lomax вершит под конец добро и устраивает бал.
