A Library’s Approach to Books That Offend

The book, published 79 years ago, was moved in 2007 from the public area of the library to a back room where it is held under lock and key.

The move came after a patron objected, as others have, to the way Africans are depicted in the book. “The content is racially offensive to black people,’’


Here's what NYT search returns for this article: "The European literature of the 19th century is replete with unfavorable stereotypical descriptions of Jews". Nowhere to be found in the article though... Wrong! It's in the comments:

This is abusrd and defiles the integrity of the author’s work. The European literature of the 19th century is replete with unfavorable stereotypical descriptions of Jews, as they were considered in the context of that era in time. As a Jew, however, I understand the context and still enjoy reading such literature. I would not want to ban such books, or the study of them, because they might offend my heritage. - ind2002
