desolate truth

Hopeless, however, to convey this to the Colonel. The desolate truth was that the Colonel was extremely stupid, and it came to me, as we sat there, glumly ordering lunch, that for extremely stupid people anti-Semitism was a form of intellectuality, the sole form of intellectuality of which they were capable.

- Artists in Uniform, A story By Mary McCarthy

this extremely funny encounter with unnamed colonel shows that Mary McCarthy lost all her wit and reflection when it came to the sacred Jewish Question. the desolate truth is that in her dialog with the colonel she is extremely stupid, not he.

via What Did They Think of the Jews by Allan Gould (Editor)

so according to Mary McCarthy all these people were extremely stupid and anti-Semitism was the sole form of intellectuality of which they were capable.

great book. lots of details. not sure editor Allan Gould meant it to be so entertaining.
