Against ‘Pro-Israel’ - in a cumbersome and very circumspect way though

The way things really are

Miss Lonelyhearts is a book about what's really happening out there. Most of the people inhabiting this planet are blessed by the evolution with a cognitive bias which allows then not to concentrate on the "negative". Nathanael West, as well as his protagonist known in the book by his "pen name" Miss Lonelyhearts are both denied this blessing. They see things the way things really are. Which is, according to the "depressive realism" concept is the correct way to see the reality.

The protagonist, Miss Lonelyhearts, works for a newspaper. His work is to read letters by the newspaper subscribers, and based on them to write a newspaper column giving advice and providing support and counseling to the readers in their difficult situations. The problem with Miss Lonelyhearts is that he's so much depressed by unspeakable human suffering he encounters in the letters and life around him that he can't in earnest give any advice or consolation his readership expects from him.

In fact, the only advice he can give to his readers is suicide, but his editor says that his job is to increase the subscriber base, not to decrease it. This is an example of dark humor characteristic of Nathanael West. The book abounds with this type opf humor. It's also very poetic, and philosophical. The central chapter, "Miss Lonelyhearts in the Dismal Swamp", explains the terrible bind Miss Lonelyhearts finds himself in, both with his newspaper job - and with his life itself. West's power as a poetic prose writer and philosopher is especially clear in this chapter.

The events in this small book steadily take turn from bad to worse, and the protagonist, trying to emphasize with his readers' suffering, is murdered in the end by the crippled husband of one of the readers, who forces herself on Miss Lonelyhearts as a lover while he can't spare himself neither from her advances nor from her husband's friendship which eventually turns to violent hatred.

"Miss Lonelyhearts" should be compared with "The Loved One" by Evelyn Waugh, they have many similar characters and parallel plot developments, even though they're very different and compliment each other in many ways. "The Loved One" actually has certain common themes with another West's novel, "The Day of the Locust", too.

West was a very powerful writer, this can be clearly seen in "Miss Lonelyhearts", as well as in "The Day of the Locust". Both deserve to be much better known, but, probably, they're to dark and unsympathetic towards American public (and humanity in general) to enjoy wider recognition. Amazon

Shalimar the Clown

Rushdi in this book is an Orientalist, almost in the Edward Said sense. Romantic tribalist, anti-modernist - is he for real? or is he just pretending? we don't know and we'll never know for sure, but we can be confident that "Oriental tribal paradise lost" is the message of "Shalimar the Clown".

From this viewpoint Max Ophüls operatic and incongruous figure can be understood. While all other characters in Rushdie's fairy tale are presented through the magic realism lens and "make sense" magically and realistically, as fairy tale charachters should, Ophüls is presented as a caricature, and he's the only evil incarnate in the novel.

All other sins can be forgiven - and are forgiven - in the fairy tale world we are shown. All evildoers are forgiven, even iron mullah Maulana Bulbul Fakh - because of one single redeeming quality: sincerity. Ophüls is a "man without qualities" - and yes! Rushdie does quote the title of Musil's novel in "Shalimar the Clown" - and "man without qualities" can't be forgiven, since he's the real destructing force behind all others.

So this is why Rushdie used film producer's Max Ophüls name: to underscore "generic Western" origin of corruption, and Jewish - as quintessentially Western modernizing force/influence (see "The Jewish Century" by Yuri Slezkine).

Surely Rushdie hates any and every government: Indian, Pakistani, American - because the governments are run and owned and the strings are pulled by "men without qualities", which are insincere, untrue by definition.

This is why the part "Max" in the middle of the book reads worse than a James Bond novel, where everything is fake: heroism, suffering, sacrifice, even the evildoers are fake, as this Nazi woman seduced by Ophüls: she bites and claws him during sex which he heroically (ridiculously) endures.

Но у нее роль настолько очевидная и так ей подходит, что ей надо было бы напрячься чтобы сыграть плохо. Визбор сам себя играет как всегда в эпизоде, молодая Соловей и тому подобное. Сценарий Гребнева - из рук вон, хоть это и по его сценарию "Дикая собака динго", но там-то Фраерман в основе. "Доживем до понедельника" вышел в 68-м, тематика практически та же, Фрумин как раз на "документальность" упирает, очевидно. "Ключ без права передачи" вышел в 76-м... ну а "Крылья" Шепитько вообще вышли в 66-м, так что Фрумин мог бы и отдохнуть, мне кажется. "Пастораль" вышла в 1975-м, кстати. так что Фрумин мог бы отдохнуть дважды.

I think the title of my review says it all. I am not a huge fan of Woody's movies, but this one is really outrageous. Surely there can be «easy viewing» in movies like «easy listening» in music, but here we're knee deep in glamour, it's overflowing in this «Manhattan in Barselona» exercise.

His «Match Point» is a very simplistic movie, but at least there's no attempt to deceive the viewer. The joke is a joke is a joke, and «Match Point» is even a sufficiently funny one. There's nothing funny about «Vicky Cristina Barcelona». It would have been plain boring if not for huge doze of glamour and hints at deep psychological/existential meaning.

Triumph of the Will (1934) - полное говно. не знаю, кто там видит блестящую работу оператора или режиссера - по-моему занудство редкое во всех отношениях не говоря уже о содержании. речь Брежнева на XXIII съезде и то интереснее была. а то и на XXVI. Алоизыч в подметки Иосифу не годится. чувство юмора отсутствует, кричит непрерывно, руками размахивает. вообще эстетика пещерная, хуже чем парад физкультурников на Красной площади. засранцы, одним словом. повторю: не говоря уже о содержании. херню несут все, а уж по поводу "тонкошеих вождей" и прочих "полулюдей" - посмотрел бы Осип Эмильевич на тех, может он бы не стал так уж сильно наезжать на этих.

я бы до 10 утра передавал только итальянское барокко. исключительно. в 10 можно начинать легкие арии из опер типа Flower Duet или песни Форе, к примеру, ну или из Tales of Hoffman Оффенбаха что-нибудь. часов в 11 можно уже Мендельсона, а в 12 - и Гайдна струнные квартеты, дальше - Бетховена (не квартеты, конечно, сонаты для скрипки и фортепиано). Ближе к двум часам можно уже симфонии, от Бетховена до Бородина. Дальше - Шопена, баллады, мазурки, ну и Брамса можно концерты, и Бетховена опять же - часов до шести. К семи уже можно фортепианные сонаты Гайдна и Бетховена, а в 8 вечера - Малера симфонии и песни. Шуберта опять же вокал. После 9 вечера - Перголези, французское барокко, ну и Бах потом: концерты, Гольдберг-вариации, клавир... и всю ночь - кантаты. как вариант в 10 вечера можно Шёнберга иногда. и ноктюрны Шопена. а кому не нравится - всех бы на хер послал. вот так.

последнее время все чаще думаю, что все эти упражнения с похуданием — вещь неестественная, неправильная. и со спортом — тоже. то есть — двигаться нужно, несомненно, но вовсе не для того, чтобы худеть, а просто чтобы быть в тонусе.

я всю жизнь ел абсолютно что хотел, и до 45 лет мой вес не менялся ни на килограмм. жирное, постное, - неважно, вес был стабильный. организм — гомеостат, и в разумных пределах внешних воздействий он поддерживает свое состояние. нормальный человек просто не захочет сьесть то, что «не положено». я, например, сладкое никогда не любил, но уверен, что у «сластен» не слабая воля, а что-то с обменом веществ с самого начала не так.

The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that more than fourteen million Americans suffer from major depression every year, and more than three million suffer from minor depression (whose symptoms are milder but last longer than two years). Greenberg thinks that numbers like these are ridiculous—not because people aren’t depressed but because, in most cases, their depression is not a mental illness. It’s a sane response to a crazy world.

Greenberg basically regards the pathologizing of melancholy and despair, and the invention of pills designed to relieve people of those feelings, as a vast capitalist conspiracy to paste a big smiley face over a world that we have good reason to feel sick about. The aim of the conspiracy is to convince us that it’s all in our heads, or, specifically, in our brains—that our unhappiness is a chemical problem, not an existential one.


Greenberg is repeating a common criticism of contemporary psychiatry, which is that the profession is creating ever more expansive criteria for mental illness that end up labeling as sick people who are just different...


In 1949, Philip Ash, an American psychologist, published a study in which he had fifty-two mental patients examined by three psychiatrists, two of them, according to Ash, nationally known. All the psychiatrists reached the same diagnosis only twenty per cent of the time, and two were in agreement less than half the time.



In 1952, a British psychologist, Hans Eysenck, published a summary of several studies assessing the effectiveness of psychotherapy. “There . . . appears to be an inverse correlation between recovery and psychotherapy,” Eysenck dryly noted. “The more psychotherapy, the smaller the recovery rate.”


But do we think that people who are naturally fearless lack character? We usually think the opposite. Yet those people are just born lucky. Why should the rest of us have to pay a price in dread, shame, and stomach aches to achieve a state of being that they enjoy for nothing?
