следовало бы назвать пасквилем, если бы не было так изумительно написано. странно, что его на премию не выдвинули, куда там до него муратовым и алексиевич. впрочем, дают только живым.

это Леонид Борисович Цыпкин за "жидочков" гениально оттоптался на ФМД. на странице 1 "жидочков" встречается 5 (пять!) раз. ишь как его зацепило. ну не только за это, конечно. там в предисловии со слов "тема антисемитизма" более подробно объясняется.

вот как мы его за это:

ну и дальше - почти до самого конца. вкус, слог, метафорический ряд у Цыпкина - безупречные. все эти плавания, воспоминания о кордегардии, вершины, треугольники, даже канкан... правда, про Солженицына и Сахарова и патлатых с длинными носами он съехал в пошлость и дешевку.

и вот на странице 4 Цыпкин добрался, наконец, до главного, рокового вопроса:

описания Ленинграда, коммуналки, музея Достоевского и смерти - просто гениальны, без преувеличений.

...что, собственно, мне надо было здесь? — почему меня так странно привлекала и манила жизнь этого человека, презиравшего меня («заведомо», «зазнамо», как он любил выражаться) и мне подобных?

нет ответа.

книга неожиданно неплохая. что-то среднее между Куприным и А. Толстым, ближе к последнему, особенно про Париж. словарь у него обширный, рамолисемент например, или вот ветгурин непонятный какой-то: ветгурин вез нас латинскою дорогой - вообще найти не удается. господи, да это же опять сбой OCR, это веттурин, от веттурино!

много слов и руских: лисица мышковала... а теперь болталась в тороках наездника. ... Я помню резкий ветер, заметюшку, сыпавшую сухим снегом под мохнатые бабки Петушка.

написано от лица женщины. интересно, что об этом сказала бы какая-нибудь критикесса с феминистским уклоном. кстати, а никто еще не написал Лолиту от лица девочки, героини?

забавно, но местами еще странным образом напоминает Маску Лема: Зевс Отриколийский и прочая мифология. Проклятая, но и чудесная моя земля.

Bad Taste Is Good Business - хорошая фраза. попалась мне в The Girls of Cincinnati, еще один пример того, что в любой книге есть по крайней мере одна интересная фраза. странно, что google находит ее кроме этой книжки всего в одном месте: Bad Taste Is Good Business For Elton John. ну что ж, про сэра Элтона лучше не скажешь, наверное.

не зря я купил The Strange Woman. хотя фильм и неплохой, книга гораздо интереснее. начинается со скромного адюльтера, но дальше - больше. главная героиня - самая настоящая нимфетка, это недвусмысленно поясняется на самых первых страницах, но этим дело далеко не кончается. чего там только нет, от инцеста (вместо Гумберта - отец героини, хотя до consummation дело не доходит) - и до садизма. кроме того убедительно показано как американские поселенцы друг друга screwed up royally в бизнесе, это в начале XIX века. написано, кстати, неплохо.

увлекательное описание медицинских методов тех времен - в начале части III Isaiah Poster

Ben Ames Williams написал много книг, вот к примеру Lady In Peril, тоже наверное не скучная.

a short section about Kovalevskaya (pg 278) says

While studying rigid-body dynamics, Kovalevskaya produced two major results. The first was an example of a spinning top whose motion could be completely analyzed and solved, in the same sense that Newton had solved the two-body problem. Two other such "integrable tops" were already known, but hers was more subtle d surprising.

More important, she proved that no other solvable tops could exist. She had found the last one. Ail others from then on would non-integrable, meaning that their dynamics would be impossible to solve with Newtonian-style formulas. It wasn't a matter of insufficient cleverness; she proved that there simply couldn't be any formulas of a certain type (in the jargon, a meromorphic function of time) that could describe the motion of the top forever. In this way, she put limits on what calculus could do. If even a spinning top could defy Laplace's demon, there was no hope — even in principle - of finding a formula for the fate of the universe.

this has to do with determinism, obviously, but i could not find any reference to Kovalevskaya findings anywhere else.

still, sections on determinism are somewhat interesting. he talks about "deterministic and still unpredictable" because of non-linearity.
