negative revelation

Beware The Tenured
There may be a way forward. I argue that we can account for the evolution of consciousness only if we reject reductionism about consciousness. Most consciousness researchers employ a reductionist view of the universe, where physics is running the show. Thus insofar as there are some future possibilities left open by the arrangements of particles in our brains, they are settled by nothing more than the random chanciness implicit in quantum mechanics. и что же это там over and above the laws of physics хочем знатьSome challenges have lately emerged to this reductionist paradigm. The neuroscientist Kevin Mitchell has argued that the free will of conscious organisms plays a role in determining what will happen in the brain, over and above what is settled by the laws of physics.
- Beware The Tenured Bearing Junk Science
- Well written but so deeply flawed it’s “not even wrong”
- Bold assertion with no evidence
Civil war has broken out in the field of consciousness research. More than 100 consciousness researchers have signed a letter accusing one of the most popular scientific theories of consciousness – the integrated information theory – of being pseudoscience. Philip Goff returns with panpsychism: now claims that a non-goddy “conscious Universe” explains the “fine-tuning” of physical constants permitting life,

First it was acid rain, then it was was the ozone layer disappearing, then it was global warming, then it was the ice caps are going to melt and now it’s climate change. And what’s the only thing that’s actually changed in that time? The amount of tax we pay to ‘combat’ this so called climate change. Mr Al Gore has made quite a lot of cash on the back of his fight against ‘climate change’. Obama told us that the sea will rise by 10ft because of ‘climate change’ when he was in office, yet he bought a waterfront property after he left office. Why would anyone do that if they knew sea levels were about to rise 10ft in the next decade? State of Fear by Michael Crichton,

timeless world of contemplation
I knocked and entered, feeling as though I'd been transported into a timeless world of contemplation. On the Origin of Time: Stephen Hawking's Final Theory
...
I would position myself in front of Stephen, clearly in his field of vision, and probe his mind by firing questions.Stephen’s eyes would light up brightly when my arguments resonated with his intuition.
In his book Cosmic Landscape an opinionated string theorist Leonard Susskind ... (who can be relied upon forдальше, однако, довольно интересно. вот, к примеруwildbold speculation)...
Back then ... cosmologists acquired the dubious reputation of being "often in error but never in doubt." In effect, in the 1950s, the big bang theory almost slipped from public view. Vocal in his opposition to Lemaître's theory, the British astrophysicist Fred Hoyle had coined the term big bang as a derisory term, during a BBC radio interview in 1949, and painted it as "an irrational process that cannot be described in scientific terms." Hoyle missed no opportunity to portray big bang cosmology as pseudoscience that had been pursued in a concordist endeavor.

interpretations of quantum physics
‘He [von Neumann] was ill at ease with people who were self-made or came from modest backgrounds,’ says Ulam of von Neumann in Princeton. ‘He felt most comfortable with third- or fourth-generation wealthy Jews.’Soon after Hilbert issued his challenge, the intellectually dynamic but psychologically frail Austrian mathematician Kurt Gödel would demonstrate that it is impossible to prove that mathematics is either complete or consistent. - pg 111
...
Even Oppenheimer’s landlady in Berkeley was a communist.
This seems odd today, but von Neumann, Turing, Norbert Wiener and other thinkers who contributed to the foundations of the field that became known as ‘artificial intelligence’ did think about computers as ‘electronic brains’. Today using ‘brain’ or ‘neuron’ in the context of computers seems laughably naive. - pg 122laughably naive my ass.

now it is our turn
Ludwig Boltzmann, who spent much of his life studying statistical mechanics, died in 1906, by his own hand. Paul Ehrenfest, carrying on the work, died similarly in 1933. Now it is our turn to study statistical mechanics. Is This a Real Science Textbook Introduction?

i'm rather surprised so many people are for it. one guy says I'd rather improve on itreated embryo selection. Embryo selection in general. this is something i wouldn't mind i guess. not entirely sure... some arguments for cloning are clearly itiotic

We Live in a Simulation
Yet there have been skeptics. Physicist Frank Wilczek has argued that there’s too much wasted complexity in our universe for it to be simulated. Building complexity requires energy and time. Why would a conscious, intelligent designer of realities waste so many resources into making our world more complex than it needs to be?it's not complexity. it's called macaroni code, stupid.
The simplest explanation for the existence of an experience or qualia is that it exists for the purpose of being an experience. [youtube]...
So here we are generating this product called consciousness that we apparently don’t have a use for, that is an experience and hence must serve as an experience. The only logical next step is to surmise that this product serves someone else.

quantum computing industry is a hype bubble
Despite billions of dollars being poured into quantum computing, Gourianov argues, the industry has yet to develop a single product that's actually capable of solving practical problems.via / see also Quantum Computing Hype is Bad for Science Quantum Winter Is Coming"The little revenue they generate mostly comes from consulting missions aimed at teaching other companies about 'how quantum computers will help their business,'" Gourianov wrote for the FT, "as opposed to genuinely harnessing any advantages that quantum computers have over classical computers."
The money, he argues, is coming from investors who typically don't have "any understanding of quantum physics," while "taking senior positions in companies and focusing solely on generating fanfare."

About 30 years ago there was much talk that Geologists ought only to observe & not theorise;6 & I well remember some one saying, that at this rate a man might as well go into a gravel-pit & count the pebbles & describe their colours. How odd it is that every one should not see that all observation must be for or against some view, if it is to be of any service. -- Charles Darwin to Henry Fawcett
quoted in Sceptic by Michael Shermer,
If scientific observations are to be of any use, they must be tested against a theory, hypothesis or model. The facts never just speak for themselves. They must be interpreted through the colored lenses of ideas: percepts need concepts.

Ideology as Biology
Here he cited “common knowledge” of “negatively correlated personality and intellectual gifts” (i.e., the assumption that highly intelligent people are less pleasant and vice-versa). ... Wilson’s condescension in claiming that while natural selection could explain intelligence, intelligence doesn’t make one happy, reeks of the kind of temporizing paternalism invoked during the days of slavery and Jim Crow. -- Ideology as Biologyhit piece в чистом виде, особенно забавно, что эти ребята пишут demonstrators dumped a glass of water over Wilson’s head. это учитывая, что этот эпизод хорошо известен: protesters dumped a pitcher of ice water on Wilson’s head while he was speaking at a scientific meeting in 1978.
Some few, & I am one, even wish to God, though at the loss of millions of lives, that the North would proclaim a crusade against Slavery. In the long run, a million horrid deaths would be amply repaid in the cause of humanity. — Great God how I should like to see that greatest curse on Earth Slavery abolished. - Charles Darwin on Racism, Slavery, and Eugenicsжж

anatomical signs of criminality
A belief in anatomical signs of criminality can be detected in Egyptian writings 4,000 years old, in Homer's epics, in the Hippocratic and Galenic doctrines of ancient medicine, and in the Bible. Socrates was charged by a physiognomist with having a face that betrayed brutality. - @BiorealismCrime & Human Nature: The Definitive Study of the Causes of Crime by James Q. Wilson, Richard J. HerrnsteinWhether crime was caused by biology or environment, Lombroso believed crime was often caused, it was not an expression of free & malicious intent...Lombroso and his school were allied with the reformatory movement...prisoners, whom they saw as victims of bad biology or society.

Bullshit Asymmetry Principle
The Law of Very Large Numbers: Given a wide enough dataset, any pattern can be observed. A million to one odds happen 8 times a day in NYC (population 8 million). The world hasn't become crazier, we're just seeing more of everything.and lots more there from @G_S_Bhogal...
Brandolini's Law (aka the Bullshit Asymmetry Principle): It takes a lot more energy to refute bullshit than to produce it. Hence, the world is full of unrefuted bullshit....
If you torture the data for long enough, it'll confess to anything.
Bullshit Asymmetry Principle has the most likes (>5K), mine included.
