интервью с Robert Sapolsky в NYT, все верно говорит, хотя ничего нового не придумал, написал книжку еще одну “Determined: A Science of Life Without Free Will” - pop science, ясное дело. NYT его поэтому продвигает, ну и еще потому, что он подходит в плане повесточки:

Some of that has to do with genetics: What’s the makeup of their olfactory receptors? With childhood: What conditioning did they have to particular smells? All of that affects the outcome.

это все стоит сравнить с Innate by Kevin J. Mitchell, гораздо более содержательная и книга. (там по ссылке цитата из Фальшивомонетчики Андре Жида прямо относится к делу). Sapolsky пишет про ответственность за свои действия: we can take ownership in a purely mechanical sense. у него там много такого: Every living organism is just a biological machine. и тому подобное.

a short section about Kovalevskaya (pg 278) says

While studying rigid-body dynamics, Kovalevskaya produced two major results. The first was an example of a spinning top whose motion could be completely analyzed and solved, in the same sense that Newton had solved the two-body problem. Two other such "integrable tops" were already known, but hers was more subtle d surprising.

More important, she proved that no other solvable tops could exist. She had found the last one. Ail others from then on would non-integrable, meaning that their dynamics would be impossible to solve with Newtonian-style formulas. It wasn't a matter of insufficient cleverness; she proved that there simply couldn't be any formulas of a certain type (in the jargon, a meromorphic function of time) that could describe the motion of the top forever. In this way, she put limits on what calculus could do. If even a spinning top could defy Laplace's demon, there was no hope — even in principle - of finding a formula for the fate of the universe.

this has to do with determinism, obviously, but i could not find any reference to Kovalevskaya findings anywhere else.

still, sections on determinism are somewhat interesting. he talks about "deterministic and still unpredictable" because of non-linearity.

от себя добавлю: помогать в борьбе за жизнь, за физическое выживание - да, за счет успешной коммуникации с другими особями. для успешной коммуникации нужно уметь подробно описывать свое состояние и состояние окружающего мира. вот для этого сознание и нужно, и да, оно дает эволюционные преимущества.

про сознание

оставил машину у механика, отдал ему ключ. когда забирал машину, сел за руль и вспомнил, что нет ключа. спросил у механика, он сказал, сейчас посмотрю, стал искать, обошел всю мастерскую дважды, не может найти. я поискал еще по карманам - нашел ключ в левом кармане. то есть он мне ключ отдал, я его взял и положил в карман, и мы оба не обратили на это внимания. вот эти выражения: не заметил, не обратил внимания - очень много говорят о сознании и свободной воле.

зато у него гендерное довольно интересно. вернее - интересный вопрос, обсуждение - не слишком.

На вопрос, почему так мало женщин-поэтов, композиторов или художников, стандартные феминистические ответы всем известны. Но почему тогда равенство женщин в "телесных" видах искусства (вокал, пластика, танец) никогда и никем сомнению не подвергалось? Они требуют не меньшей самоотдачи и куда больших временных затрат.

Причем это равенство на исполнительские инструментальные дисцплины не распространяется.

я сам вряд ли отличу на слух женщин-исполнительниц музыки.

первый автор, с которым соглашаюсь пока по всем пункттам:

• свободной воли нет, это иллюзия, создаваемая мозгом
• hard determinism - тоже чушь, и да, дело в нерешаемости задачи трех тел (но не в квантовой неопределенности, потому что она устраняется на макро уровне, см. также теорию множественных вселенных)
• ответственность не имеет никакого отношения к свободе воли; ответственность - социальная конструкция, необходимая для существования общества.
• правильныый вопрос: What on earth do humans want to be free from? (в книге он разъясняет подробно, почему это глупость)

и Ницше туда же

причем давно, раньше всех Деннетов.

от себя добавлю как самый очевидный пример: я хочу есть. да разве это я хочу? это хочется, это оно хочет. точно так и все остальное.

я - это не более чем механизм для отчета о происходящем.

вообще трудно придумать более дурацкую концепцию чем свобода воли.

Are we free? by Daniel Dennett, учитывая доктрину предопределения, интересно отметить, что вопрос о свободе воли не становится проще - с какой точки зрения его ни рассматривай, будь ты хоть самый озверелый атеист, будь ты хоть самый упертый кальвинист. в комментариях к статье Деннета некий George Ortega разъясняет:

(a) Everything is caused; (b) Human thoughts are caused; (c) The antecedent causes to human thoughts regress to before the person’s birth; (d) Therefore human thoughts are not fundamentally attributable to a human free will. и далее о causa sui, (self-caused) or ex nihilo, (out of nothing).

но самое забавное, что четверть материала Деннета, являющегося рецензией на новую книгу Free: Why Science Hasn’t Disproved Free Will by Alfred Mele, последние три крупных абзаца, посвящены тому факту, что Mele’s research, as he scrupulously announces, and not in fine print, is supported by the Templeton Foundation.

от себя добавлю: конечно свободная воля есть. в том же смысле, как лавина сходит - свободно. она может сойти от неосторожно произнесенного слова. а иногда чтобы она сошла стреляют из пушки. так и с людьми. и Гамлет был неправ со своей флейтой, очень даже можно человеком управлять, и управляют успешно. иногда - тихим словом, а иногда - из пушки. управляют свободной волей, да.

все толковые люди согласны, что вопрос существования свободной воли следует отделить от вопроса существования ответственности. по чисто практическим соображениям, ага.
