There may be a way forward. I argue that we can account for the evolution of consciousness only if we reject reductionism about consciousness. Most consciousness researchers employ a reductionist view of the universe, where physics is running the show. Thus insofar as there are some future possibilities left open by the arrangements of particles in our brains, they are settled by nothing more than the random chanciness implicit in quantum mechanics.

Some challenges have lately emerged to this reductionist paradigm. The neuroscientist Kevin Mitchell has argued that the free will of conscious organisms plays a role in determining what will happen in the brain, over and above what is settled by the laws of physics.

So, obviously, if conscious, thinking subjects with free will (assuming there is such a thing) could exist together within a simulated world, with the power to affect one another and their shared phenomenal environment for either good or ill, then by that very token they and their world would be no less real than one composed of such physical ingredients as basic particles, molecules, and organic tissues.

ну правильно, и что? дальше он пишет: ...in a simulated world, only simulated selves could exist; no one — absolutely no one — ever will or could be at home there. и чем ему не нравятся simulated selves? Он спорит (ругается!) с Чалмерсом на довольно примитивном уровне, я бы сказал: Even as “conceivability” arguments go, this one is pretty feeble. It presumes everything it is meant to prove.

дальше там вообще чушь, начиная с Would it not make more sense to assume that the brain’s capacity for mentality... Syntax cannot exist prior to or apart from semantics, and neither exists except in the intentional activity of a mind. - как раз наоборот, синтаксис первичен.

I would be very surprised if none of them [animals - vs] shared at least part of our conscious experiences.
...
For instance they [monkeys - vs] can be rewarded to press one key if they see a light and another if they do not. This motor act can then be used as a proxy for a minimal "report": a nonverbal gesture equivalent to animal saying "I think I saw a light" or "I didn't see anything."

funny thing is we can teach a computer to do that even easier than any animal. A computer can actually say "I think I saw a light" in human voice in any language, so no proxy whatsoever would be required. I wonder if Stanislas Dehaene would agree that this computer shared at least part of our conscious experiences.

от себя добавлю: помогать в борьбе за жизнь, за физическое выживание - да, за счет успешной коммуникации с другими особями. для успешной коммуникации нужно уметь подробно описывать свое состояние и состояние окружающего мира. вот для этого сознание и нужно, и да, оно дает эволюционные преимущества.

The scientists held a sheathed coil of wire against the scalp and “zapped” it—sent an intense pulse of magnetic energy into the skull — inducing a brief electric current in the neurons underneath. The perturbation, in turn, excited and inhibited the neurons’ partner cells in connected regions, in a chain reverberating across the cortex, until the activity died out. A network of electroencephalogram (EEG) sensors, positioned outside the skull, recorded these electrical signals. As they unfolded over time, these traces, each corresponding to a specific location in the brain below the skull, yielded a movie.

These unfolding records neither sketched a stereotypical pattern, nor were they completely random. Remarkably, the more predictable these waxing and waning rhythms were, the more likely the brain was unconscious. The researchers quantified this intuition by compressing the data in the movie with an algorithm commonly used to “zip” computer files. The zipping yielded an estimate of the complexity of the brain’s response. Volunteers who were awake turned out have a “perturbational complexity index” of between 0.31 and 0.70, dropping to below 0.31 when deeply asleep or anesthetized. Massimini and Tononi tested this zap-and-zip measure on 48 patients who were brain-injured but responsive and awake, finding that in every case, the method confirmed the behavioral evidence for consciousness.
