see also Another COVID Myth Dies The Death:

The demonization of surfaces and rooms stemmed not just from active imaginations; it was also recommended and even mandated by the CDC. It offered a huge page of instructions on the need constantly to fear, scrub, and fumigate.

On April 5, however, the CDC page was replaced by a much-simplified set of instructions, which includes now this discreet note: “In most situations, the risk of infection from touching a surface is low.” Oh is that so?

and more:
Fortunately the New York Times did some accurate reporting on the CDC update, quoting all kinds of experts who claim to have known this all along.

“Finally,” said Linsey Marr, an expert on airborne viruses at Virginia Tech. “We’ve known this for a long time and yet people are still focusing so much on surface cleaning.” She added, “There’s really no evidence that anyone has ever gotten Covid-19 by touching a contaminated surface.”

Talent vs Luck

Talent vs Luck: the role of randomness in success and failure - познавательная статья.
...those with earlier surname initials are significantly more likely to receive tenure at top departments ... middle name initials enhance evaluations of intellectual performance ... people with easy-to-pronounce names are judged more positively than those with difficult-to-pronounce names ... that individuals with noble-sounding surnames are found to work more often as managers than as employees ...

Тотальное равновесие

One Ball Total Equilibrium Tank epitomises the best of the New York-based artist. It is deceptively simple, painstakingly executed, and intellectually ambitious: a well-balanced combination of new ideas and art historical influences. - Jeff Koons review

- Базар, - кратко ответил Ходжа Насреддин.

corridors of power

Nor was the Nazi regime, in a time before its concentration camps and wartime atrocities, seen in such a monstrous light. It commanded sympathy within the corridors of power in Britain and in the United States, which was even more aggressively trying to avoid Europe's simmering maelstrom than the British under Chamberlain. - In defense of Neville Chamberlain

this is The Washington Post

It commanded sympathy within the corridors of power in Britain and in the United States - this is in 1938, after The Nuremberg Laws were introduced in 1935

At the beginning of 1938, most English people sympathised with German grievances, however much they disliked Hitler’s way of voicing them. The Sudeten Germans had a good case: they did not possess national equality, or anything like it.

U.S. should support Israel

Republicans by a ratio of more than 2-to-1 say the U.S. should support Israel even when its stances diverge with American interests, a new Bloomberg Politics poll finds. Democrats, by roughly the same ratio, say the opposite is true and that the U.S. must pursue its own interests over Israel's. - bloomberg.com

Интересно, а в самом Израиле хоть кто нибудь считает что "интересы США должны перевешивать интересы Израиля"? - интересуется rms1

Uncanny valley

искусственный интеллект @ shvarz
...bright children are in fact generally quite the most fearful, since they are clearer about the boundaries of their own orientational abilities than more limited children are – although, as must of course be added, the latter can become particularly impertinent and cheeky once they have managed to achieve a certain intellectual mastery over a particular area.

...

...whether he has a human person or rather an automaton before him in the case of a particular character. This is done in such a way that the uncertainty does not appear directly at the focal point of his attention, so that he is not given the occasion to investigate and clarify the matter straight away; for the particular emotional effect, as we said, would hereby be quickly dissipated. In his works of fantasy, E. T. A. Hoffmann has repeatedly made use of this psychological artifice with
success.

...

...then the dark knowledge dawns on the unschooled observer that mechanical processes are taking place in that which he was
previously used to regarding as a unified psyche. ... In the case of an expert, the corresponding emotion will occur only rarely or perhaps be completely lacking, for to him the mechanical processes in the human mind are no longer a novelty;

...

The human desire for the intellectual mastery of one’s environment is a strong one. Intellectual certainty provides psychical shelter in the struggle for existence. However it came to be, it signifies a defensive position against the assault of hostile forces, and the lack of such certainty is equivalent to lack of cover in the episodes of that never-ending war of the human and organic world for the sake of which the strongest and most impregnable bastions of science were erected.

Pale Flower

Pale Flower: Loser Take All by Chuck Stephens - энциклопедия японского кино, и написано замечательно. читать нелегко, однако. умный очень Chuck Stephens. это он и про Crazed Fruit написал. в эссе он назвал Pale Flower 1964 squid-ink noir.
