Nothing important can come from the south

The passionate desire of people in poor countries to assert control over their natural resources, which pushed them into conflict with the United States during the Cold War, lay completely outside the experience of most American leaders. Henry Kissinger spoke for them, eloquently as always, after Chilean foreign minister Gabriel Valdes accused him of knowing nothing about the Southern Hemisphere.

“No, and I don't care,” Kissinger replied. “Nothing important can come from the south. History has never been produced in the south. The axis of history starts in Moscow, goes to Bonn, crosses over to Washington, and then goes to Tokyo. What happens in the south is of no importance.”

great unwashed first used in 1830, almost 200 years earlier than basket of deplorbles.

metaphor for settler societies

fredfitch says:
My own feeling about the first novel is that it’s a metaphor for settler societies–Israel, certain African nations, Roman Britain–that essentially create the monsters they fight, which makes them strong, but also blinds them to the fact that it’s their own aggression and desire for control that is making their new world reject them.

это про Deathworld by Harry Harrison.

You'll get there

6:20 Episode 2, Season 1, The Expanse (2015)

Keep at it partner. You'll get there.

switch off turbines etc

. Wind farms paid up to £3 million per day to switch off turbines - because they overwhelm power grid!

. "Companies such as ours cannot just build promising new technology and let market forces decide how it will be used" -- Sundar Pichai January 19 2020 via

. Балакирева звали Милий Алексеевич, how very interesting.

Scum

Isaac Bashevis Singer: Scum - живенько. Nobel? why not.

Deathworld

Was Harry Harrison's Deathworld about Israel?

answered by Grace Swaim on Aug 8, 2014:
As with any book, it is about whatever you interpret it to be. The common theme of "violence breeds violence" could apply to many, many books and many, many real world examples.

what is the right word here, for this answer, equivocal?

glasses on his nose

As Walter Benjamin — with glasses on his nose, autumn in his soul, and vicarious murder in his heart—wrote in 1921, “If the rule of myth is broken occasionally in the present age, the coming age is not so unimaginably remote that an attack on law is altogether futile. But if the existence of violence outside the law, as pure immediate violence, is assured, this furnishes proof that revolutionary violence, the highest manifestation of unalloyed violence by man, is possible, and shows by what means."

- The Jewish Century By Yuri Slezkine

In the next story, "How Things Were Done in Odessa," the primary narrator is an unworldly Jew, described as having glasses on his nose and autumn in his heart ... - The Complete Works of Isaac Babel
via Kevin MacDonald @TOOEdit

comment from @HolbrookHorizon: As the woman said "It's all about the Benjamins". referring to It's All About the Benjamins
"Benjamins" is slang for $100 bills (USD), a reference to Benjamin Franklin's image on the bills.

In the Land of Lies

It seems such an obvious truth: In regione caecorum rex est luscus — “In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king.” But the English writer H.G. Wells turned the proverb on its head in his short-story “The Country of the Blind” (1904), one of the cleverest and most profound ever written. Wells’ story describes a sighted mountaineer who, while climbing in the Andes, discovers a hidden valley where the inhabitants have been blind for generations.

Does the sighted mountaineer become king of the valley? Far from it. Socially speaking, his faculty of sight isn’t merely a disadvantage but a dangerous curse. The blind tribesfolk are not impressed by his claims to possess an additional and superior sense.

- In the Land of Lies, Tobias Langdon
In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king - Desiderius Erasmus

I doubt if a single individual could be found from the whole of mankind free from some form of insanity. The only difference is one of degree. - Desiderius Erasmus
