Slezkine strikes again

To be a true intelligent meant being religious about being secular; asking “the accursed questions” over lunch and dinner; falling deeper and deeper into doubt and confusion as a matter of principle; and feeling both chosen and damned for being better educated, more intelligent, and more honest than one’s milieu. - pg 24, Yuri Slezkine, The House of Government
excerpt in LARB

Slezkine)

vanquished and the irrelevant

Threatened by a serious challenge to the sacred center of its legitimacy and by the danger of mass conversions within the elite, the twentieth-century American state proclaimed its Communist subjects “un-American” and vigorously defended itself for as long as the threat remained serious. “The doctrine of tolerance” is reserved for the vanquished and the irrelevant. - Slezkine, pg 181

for vanquished and the irrelevant - yes, but not for the deplorables

On Jewish Vulgarity

With John Murray Cuddihy’s ‘The Ordeal of Civility’ and Yuri Slezkine’s ‘The Jewish Century,’ Tablet begins a three-part look at the once-vibrant Jewish trait of not caring what the goyim think.

ясное дело The Occidental Observer не мог пропустить такой случай и в свою очередь откликнулся статьей On Jewish Vulgarity. финал там ударный, начиная со слов "Moses, who I am assuming is Jewish..."

Therefore the [National Socialist] occupant made an effort in Poland to impose upon the Poles pornographic publications and movies.

black Russians

In southern Africa, the Xhosa were defeated in eight "Kaffir wars," driven from much of their land and plagued by persistent droughts and cattle epidemics. ... Helping them would be "new people", known as "Russians". The Xhosa had recently heard that the much hated former Cape governor, George Cathcart, had been killed in the Crimean war, and concluded that the people who had killed him were strong, black, and - since they were fighting the British - Xhosa ancestors too.

best history (и не только) books

Jash Dholani aka oldbooksguy: What are the best history books?

Yuri Slezkine: The House of Government,

The Origins of Contemporary France, The Glory and the Dream

House of Government by Yuri Slezkine,

glasses on his nose

As Walter Benjamin — with glasses on his nose, autumn in his soul, and vicarious murder in his heart—wrote in 1921, “If the rule of myth is broken occasionally in the present age, the coming age is not so unimaginably remote that an attack on law is altogether futile. But if the existence of violence outside the law, as pure immediate violence, is assured, this furnishes proof that revolutionary violence, the highest manifestation of unalloyed violence by man, is possible, and shows by what means."

- The Jewish Century By Yuri Slezkine

In the next story, "How Things Were Done in Odessa," the primary narrator is an unworldly Jew, described as having glasses on his nose and autumn in his heart ... - The Complete Works of Isaac Babel

comment from @HolbrookHorizon: As the woman said "It's all about the Benjamins". referring to It's All About the Benjamins
"Benjamins" is slang for $100 bills (USD), a reference to Benjamin Franklin's image on the bills.

Shalimar the Clown

Rushdi in this book is an Orientalist, almost in the Edward Said sense. Romantic tribalist, anti-modernist - is he for real? or is he just pretending? we don't know and we'll never know for sure, but we can be confident that "Oriental tribal paradise lost" is the message of "Shalimar the Clown".

From this viewpoint Max Ophüls operatic and incongruous figure can be understood. While all other characters in Rushdie's fairy tale are presented through the magic realism lens and "make sense" magically and realistically, as fairy tale charachters should, Ophüls is presented as a caricature, and he's the only evil incarnate in the novel.

All other sins can be forgiven - and are forgiven - in the fairy tale world we are shown. All evildoers are forgiven, even iron mullah Maulana Bulbul Fakh - because of one single redeeming quality: sincerity. Ophüls is a "man without qualities" - and yes! Rushdie does quote the title of Musil's novel in "Shalimar the Clown" - and "man without qualities" can't be forgiven, since he's the real destructing force behind all others.

So this is why Rushdie used film producer's Max Ophüls name: to underscore "generic Western" origin of corruption, and Jewish - as quintessentially Western modernizing force/influence (see "The Jewish Century" by Yuri Slezkine).

Surely Rushdie hates any and every government: Indian, Pakistani, American - because the governments are run and owned and the strings are pulled by "men without qualities", which are insincere, untrue by definition.

This is why the part "Max" in the middle of the book reads worse than a James Bond novel, where everything is fake: heroism, suffering, sacrifice, even the evildoers are fake, as this Nazi woman seduced by Ophüls: she bites and claws him during sex which he heroically (ridiculously) endures.

“Ambassador Max Ophuls these days was supporting terror activities while calling himself an ambassador for counterterrorism, had been in charge of liaison with Talib the Afghan's branch of Muj.” [Rushdie’s Last Lost Homeland: Kashmir in Shalimar the Clown]

The Averbakhs of this world

The Averbakhs of this world don’t appear by accident. They may be young, but they are going places. We have seen our share of such clever, successful, irrepressible, everywhere-at-once young men. Self-confident and self-satisfied to the point of self-abandonment, they harbor no doubt and make no mistakes. - Aleksandr Voronsky as quoted at pg 286 in The House of Government by Yuri Slezkine
