Aleinu

During the Middle Ages, one section of Aleinu became the cause of great controversy: the sentence, “For they bow down to vanity and emptiness (va’rik), and pray to a god that does not save,” which is based on the verse (Yeshaya 45:20), “Come, gather together, draw near, remnants of the nations! Those who carry their wooden idols and pray to a god that does not save have no knowledge.”

The German anti-Semite Johann Andras Eisenmanger (1655-1704) added that a further insult to Christianity was the Jew­ish custom of spitting after this sentence, a minhag that had developed due to the similarity between the words va’rik (and emptiness) and rok (saliva). Indeed, the Shaloh discouraged this minhag due to the hatred it might stir up.

Выкресты, переметнувшись в стан наших гонителей, сообщили им, что под этим словом, якобы, скрыт намек на Ешу (Иисуса), поскольку у обоих слов одинаковое числовое значение. Никакие объяснения о древнем происхождении молитвы не помогали. Сколькими жизнями наш народ расплатился за эти святые слова! (Да отомстит Всевышний за их кровь.)
